Ezrael, aka Ezra, is about the nicest, friendliest Angel of Death you could possibly meet. He carries no weapons, he's very much a pacifist...he just spends a lot of time gardening around this odd-looking tree and writing and erasing names in a big leather book. That's it. No flaming swords, no wrath of God...tea, and duty, and the occasional polite and insightful conversation.

Rumor has it that he is at least semi-retired, although how exactly that works out is between himself and God. Apparently he also has three Anakim daughters, to whom will fall the various responsibilities that he is giving up. Strangely, he only speaks of or is seen with two of them: the Anakim leader Lilith, and his youngest, Leonora. Rumor also has it that the unmentioned daughter is the bearer of all the ferocity that Ezrael chose to give up.

In his mortal disguise, he lives in Berkeley, California as a Religious Studies professor and spiritual counselor--occasionally making short forays as far afield as New York City. He is a teddybearish figure, balding, pot-bellied, generally in slightly-wrinkled tweed unless he's gardening. But his dark, gentle eyes miss absolutely nothing.

Ezrael is based on Islamic and Levantine legends about Azrael, the Angel of Death, who records and sets in motion, but does not choose, the days of a person's birth and death. He has darker and more frightening Grim Reaper-like aspects, but they almost never surface nowadays.
